We have all got the glimpse of skateboards hovering around defying rules of gravity in Back to the Future II. That future has now come true. A California based company HENDO has developed a hoverboard that can levitate around 1inch above the ground. There have been many technological advancements but no one was successful in enabling those existing technologies and bring forth a hoverboard.
The mysterious thing behind the elevating technique of hoverboard lies in its four disc shaped hover engines. These engines induces magnetic field opposite to that of the surface substrate which levitates the hoverboard and enables it glide upon the ground. And to make it glide forward or backward, the actions that are taken to stabilize it can be used to give it motion by altering the force projected on the surface underneath it. These opposing magnetic field comes from the concept of Lenz’s Law. Lenz’s Law states that eddy current are formed when magnetic materials are moved relative to conductive material. And eddy current create an opposing magnetic field in the conductive material. ENDO hoverboards use a technology called MFA (Magnetic Field Architecture) which focuses this magnetic field more efficiently.
Though having such magnificent features present hoverboard has less battery life, can only be driven on non-ferromagnetic substrate and is very expensive. Till now only four of its kind are made and HENDO has promised to produce more once they find a cheaper version. We may have to wait a bit longer to experience them personally.
These hoverboard technology is not limited for entertainment purpose only. It can be applied to stabilize buildings foundations which can be safe during earthquakes and in unique methods of fluid separation. It can also bring revolution in harnessing of energy. It can change the way of transportation as we see now. There are range of application in which MFA technology can be implemented to bring an evolved product of them.
