Kosmos 2499: Space Debris Collector or Anti-Satellite Weapon?

Satellite named Kosmos 2499 was launched on May 23,2014 from Plesetsk, Russia. It’s purpose was stated to collect Space Debris but later on when it was found that it could maneuver itself,  scientist described its functioning as a Satellite Maintenance vehicle which is designed to test Plasma Propulsion engines or Ion Thrusters. These thrusters are new generations hall effect thrusters which can maneuver any spacecraft by shifting  east-west and north-south axis. These hall effect thrusters use fraction of energy used by present propulsion engines.

But to all concerns maneuvering satellites are two edged swords. They are approach and observe other space crafts or ships or satellites and posses the ability of disabling and destroying them. And to add butter to these fear this satellite has launched along with three other military communication satellites. It can cyber-attack and jam other satellites by disrupting communications and surveillance in near orbits.

During Cold War time anti satellites projects was more emphasized by Soviet Union which was later declared Russian officials to be closed after their fall in early 1990s. These projects were not only undertaken by Russia only, America and China have already made many such successful attempts.

Its been a decade when it was found that NASA and US military have conducted experiments on satellite rendezvous technology. US Air Force has succeeded in their  XSS-11project and experimental maneuvering satellite called ANGEL. Most panicking of all is the ultra secretive X-37B space drone which has been scouting around space for several years.

Chinese have also conducted satellite maneuvering exercises, which they have assured everyone as Space Debris Collection or satellite maintenance tests. These satellites are Shiyan, Chuangxin and Shijian which are feared by experts for being a possibility of threat to other satellites.

Russia regards this Space mission as a precaution for Space security and has prevented more disclosure of this space experiment as a matter of policy. Whatever may be the cause we can only hope for the best.
